Meet Carolina: This Year’s Featured Artist

“When I think about creating a drawing, I usually start by deciding which animal I want to draw, but also whether I feel like drawing feathers, fur, scales, or skin,” Carolina shares. “Then I think about how I want to represent [the animal], which materials I want to use, and whether they highlight the chosen subject.”

Carolina’s artistic process was developed through years of dedicated study and practice. A primarily self-taught artist, she has experimented with many art forms including theater, dance, construction, photography, painting, and drawing, focusing on realistic drawings of people and animals starting at age 11.

Two years ago, Carolina participated in a scientific illustration course taught by the Portuguese illustrator Pedro Salgado. There, she learned techniques that helped her art evolve.

What’s next for Carolina’s art? “The truth is that I plan to continue drawing and creating art, but not as a profession—rather as a hobby,” she explains. “Art will continue to be present in my life, and it may take many different forms.”

If you’re an aspiring artist, here’s Carolina’s advice for you: “Keep drawing even if you feel your drawings could be better, because that’s what makes you want to improve. Draw with other people, watch videos, or sign up for courses if you can.”
