Learning to Fly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n Finnegan D.What kinds of medical careers might one day be needed in space or in a future colony? That question emerged when Finnegan connected two experiences: following the Artemis II mission with his family and attending Camp Scrubs, a medical camp hosted by Schoolcraft College. His curiosity about where medicine and space exploration might intersect led him to the goal of learning to fly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finnegan is now taking flight lessons with the Young Eagles Brighton Chapter and working through an online flight course from EAA. He hopes to earn his pilot\u2019s license when he is old enough and continue exploring where his interest in aviation might take him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Anatomy Research<\/h3>\n\n\n\n Benjamim M.A hike to a waterfall on Santa Maria Island in the Azores took an unexpected turn when Benjamim discovered a dead duckling in a small stream. Curious about its anatomy, he brought it back to the family\u2019s sailboat to investigate with his brother and sister. Together, the three siblings dissected the duckling and documented what they’ve discovered in a handmade book filled with drawings, diagrams, labels, and short informative texts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their investigation gave them a closer look at bird anatomy, particularly the digestive system and adaptations associated with a grain-based diet, while also giving them experience creating scientific diagrams and practicing watercolor painting. It began with an unexpected discovery but turned into a collaborative hands-on science project shaped entirely by the siblings\u2019 own questions and curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking 10 Languages<\/h3>\n\n\n\n Irina B.<\/strong>Age 18 | Romania | Off-Campus Program<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nLanguages have long been an important part of Irina\u2019s learning. She now speaks several: English, French, Spanish, German, Romanian, Italian, Greek, Russian, Chinese, and Japanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the past years, Irina has focused particularly on the last two languages. Her exploration has extended beyond the languages themselves through classes, different learning resources, cultural events, and an interest in Chinese and Japanese customs and legends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the student’s words: “I have always loved learning languages, and now I speak 10!<\/em>“<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

Fishing in Portugal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n Joah Joel M.Joah\u2019s passion for fishing has taken him far beyond simply catching fish. He has been exploring new fishing spots, learning about local fish, plants, and aquatic ecosystems, and developing practical skills such as building different fishing rigs and adapting his techniques to each location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Caring for the places he visits has become part of the experience too, with Joah regularly collecting litter and even finding objects that can be repaired and reused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He has also taken his interest a step further by creating a media kit and contacting fishing companies himself to introduce his project and explore opportunities to become a young bait tester. This hobby has grown into a great learning experience that connects Joah\u2019s curiosity with practical skills, the natural world, and his own initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walking Together<\/h3>\n\n\n\n Katie S.<\/strong>Age 13 | United States | Off-Campus Program<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nKatie wanted to give her cat, Jasmine Mocha, a safe way to explore the neighborhood, so Katie began practicing walks with a harness and leash. It didn’t always go as planned: sometimes Jasmine Mocha simply sat down and refused to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By paying attention to the cat’s behavior, Katie discovered what worked better, including letting the cat explore the grass and noticing that the cat walked more easily when heading toward home. Katie has used this fun experiment to practice patience, and handling an animal while finding ways for the cat to explore outdoors safely. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A Documentary on Dyslexia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n Jo\u00e3o M.For his Capstone project, Jo\u00e3o turned a subject that has shaped his own experience as a learner into a documentary about dyslexia. He combined his personal perspective with scientific research and interviews with experts, while learning how to tell a story through documentary filmmaking, conduct interviews, and communicate a complex topic in an accessible way. The project also gave Jo\u00e3o a platform to challenge misconceptions about dyslexia and encourage greater understanding of how students with different learning needs experience school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He presented the documentary in April 2026 during a master’s-level class on special educational needs at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, followed by a discussion with the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the student’s words: “Dyslexia is not a defect; it\u2019s a difference. If we start giving effort the same weight we give results, we can change the way many people feel at school and in life. No one is less capable because they learn differently.<\/em>“<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
