Although parents generally agree that kids should spend much less time with digital media, many are unsure exactly how to proceed when it comes to setting reasonable limits.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Sarah Domoff, director of the Family Health Lab at Central Michigan University, conducts research on children and screen time. If you\u2019re a parent or caregiver who would like to be intentional and thoughtful about your family\u2019s screen habits, this list of resources recommended by Domoff may help.<\/p>\n<h3>Books<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 40px;padding-bottom: 10px\">\n<li><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anyakamenetz.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Art of Screen Time<\/a><\/em>\u2014\u201cEnjoy Screens. Not too much. Mostly with others.\u201d This is Anya Kamenetz\u2019s simple yet powerful approach to children and screen time. Kamenetz, a technology expert and mother, tackles the emotional subject of kids and digital media with common sense and calm.<\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/yalebooks.yale.edu\/book\/9780300218879\/plugged\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plugged In: How Media Attract and Affect Youth<\/a><\/em>\u2014This free download from Yale University Press examines both the \u201csunny and dark side of media use by today\u2019s youth.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Websites<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 40px;padding-bottom: 10px\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Common Sense Media<\/a>\u2014For parents who can\u2019t keep up with the latest games, apps, and movies, this website is an invaluable resource. Common Sense Media provides unbiased feedback and reviews for all of the media that our kids are asking to see and use.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/family-life\/Media\/Pages\/How-to-Make-a-Family-Media-Use-Plan.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Healthy Children<\/a>\u2014Parents can be more purposeful with screen time by creating a personalized family media use plan from the American Academy of Pediatrics. After answering a series of questions about your family\u2019s goals and habits, the plan can be printed and posted where everyone in the family can see and discuss it.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/cmch.tv\/parents\/askthemediatrician\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ask the Mediatrician<\/a>\u2014This unique forum allows parents to ask a pediatrician questions about their children and screen time. Archived questions can help adults find quick answers to media concerns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Video<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 40px;padding-bottom: 10px\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.screenagersmovie.com\/trailer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Screenagers<\/em><\/a>\u2014This highly-praised documentary explores the impact of our kids\u2019 hours in front of screens on their mental and physical health.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Apps<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 40px;padding-bottom: 10px\">\n<li>There are many apps currently on the market that can help parents monitor and control their kids\u2019 screen use. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.screenagersmovie.com\/parenting-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This list<\/a>, from the creators of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.screenagersmovie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Screenagers<\/a><\/em>, includes everything from time apps to blocking apps to driving apps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Pledge<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 40px;padding-bottom: 10px\">\n<li>Finally, adults who want to help reverse the trend of putting screens into the hands of younger and younger children may be interested in joining the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waituntil8th.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wait Until 8th<\/a> movement. By signing the pledge, parents are promising to wait until at least 8th grade to give their kids smart phones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The questions and concerns surrounding screen time can often be overwhelming and confusing for parents. With a little bit of intentional research, however, we adults can make healthy decisions for our families and protect our kids\u2019 childhoods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What other resources would you add to this list?
