Each year, our students in Ann Arbor and around the world <a href=\"https:\/\/clonlara.org\/category\/volunteer-service\/\">engage in service projects<\/a>, with 180 hours required during their high school years (grades 9\u201312) for graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to encouraging young people to think about and give back to the communities in which they live, volunteering provides for positive social interactions with community members, the possibility to earn course credit, and the potential for <a href=\"https:\/\/civicyouth.org\/quick-facts\/volunteeringcommunity-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">improved academic performance<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Volunteer activities at Clonlara may include<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Formal work for a service organization such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.habitat.org\/volunteer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Habitat for Humanity<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salvationarmyusa.org\/usn\/volunteer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Salvation Army<\/a>.<\/li><li>Service learning courses through internships or apprenticeships, which may involve activities like volunteering to clean up a local park or painting over graffiti.<\/li><li>Unpaid work in service to others (for example, volunteering at hospitals, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, animal shelters, and nonprofit organizations; helping a disabled or elderly person; or providing a family in need with child care assistance).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Along the way, Clonlara\u2019s teachers and advisors will assist students and families in determining what projects meet our service requirements and whether the activities can be applied toward academic or elective course credit.<br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Volunteer Service Makes a Lasting Impression<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rachel Barton Pine - A Conversation - Part 1\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NKcBf1Gqaz4?start=500&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> <br>In an interview with <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.khfm.org\" target=\"_blank\">KHFM Classical Public Radio<\/a>, world-famous violinist and Clonlara graduate Rachel Barton Pine (Class of 1991) shared how Clonlara\u2019s volunteer service requirement inspired her to think about using her violin to \u201cserve others beyond the stage.\u201d Today, <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rbpfoundation.org\" target=\"_blank\">her foundation<\/a> provides instrument loans, education grants, and other support to \u201cyoung string players from challenging financial backgrounds who want to become professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Watch the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NKcBf1Gqaz4\" target=\"_blank\">complete KHFM interview with Rachel Barton Pine<\/a> to hear her describe how she became a homeschooler and how her educational experience influenced her love of research.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How has volunteer service impacted you&nbsp;or your family?
